Here’s the thing, I haven’t written about the Occupy movement yet because I don’t really know what it is they want. Some of them don’t even know what they want. I think we ALL want something different. This much is clear. I think we ALL know that the world was broken before Obama took over and whatever. If you’re going to disagree with me about that, well… you’ve got your head in the sand. This recession started long before that and the practices that at least some of the Occupiers are protesting against have been in place for a long time.
Here’s what I don’t get. Why isn’t every single American citizen freaking FURIOUS at the way these people are being treated?
Oh they’re dirty, they need to get jobs, they’re spoiled, whaa whaa whaaa.
People said the same shit about people protesting Vietnam. People said the same shit about our founding fathers except it was probably more “They need to pay some more taxes to a bullshit government who doesn’t care about them.”
Pay attention. IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT THESE PEOPLE WANT. They have the RIGHT to WANT whatever the hell they want. Be it marriage equality, the banks to step up and admit they screwed us all, a cheeseburger, to have the student loan debt forgiven, to have the right to bust their asses 10 hours a day for basically nothing in wages, a cookie, they have the right under our country’s Constitution to do that. They are using their rights of free speech, their freedom of assembly, their AMERICAN rights to critique what’s going on around them and ask for a change.
I can’t believe how many people want to just dismiss what’s going on. Are we that desensitized? Are we that selfish that we can just watch groups of students, who by the way are the future leaders of our country when all these old white men finally bite it, sit around and get pepper sprayed, arrested, and be generally treated with disrespect for doing exactly what our country is founded on?
You may not agree with what OWS is doing but they’re JUST AS AMERICAN as all the troop we’ve sent to fight pointless wars elsewhere over oil and a vendetta. They may not be facing certain death but they are at least using their rights and maybe they’re using them on your behalf because you’re too afraid to watch what’s going on and think of what it means.
I don’t see this as a fad or something going away or something to make fun of. Agree with this movement or not, it’s the most American thing to happen in a good long time and I welcome it. As a member of the media my job is to make sure you get heard. I may not agree with what you have to say but I am bound to give you free and equal time to say it and as an American I am honor bound to want to protect that right. I don’t see how so many people are losing focus of this fact. Free speech is the most important part of our society. The freedom to protest things that aren’t working is as well. These OWS people need our support, not our contempt.
You may not agree with the movement, but how are you going to feel when you finally grown a pair and decide to protest something and you get unjustly attacked by police for using your Constitutional rights as an American citizen? Are you going to be on “the man’s” side then?
